A photograph by Philip Preston of Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire, UK. The remains are the shell of the 13th century church of the Benedictine abbey founded after the Norman Conquest, although the first monastery here, founded in about 657, became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world.

He became interested in photography during his teenage years after purchasing a Zenith fully manual SLR camera in the 1970s, primarily doing black and white work, developing his own films and producing prints in a makeshift darkroom in his parents bathroom! His first published print was in a 1978 edition of Ashai Pentax Photography magazine, featuring a portrait of a photogenic elderly man.
